Domenick Guarneri was instrumental in the development of Briar Cliff's men's and women's soccer programs. The men's program began in 1991. Under Dom's guidance, the team produced an 81-58-6 mark, 16 All-District/Section selections, four All-Region choices and one All-American in seven seasons. The women's program was started in 1993 and produced a 36-57-2 record, eight All-District/Section choices, three All-Region selections and one All-American in five seasons under Guarneri.
Dom served as Briar Cliff's interim athletic director for a short stint before cancer took his life on March 9, 1998. Prior to being named head coach at Briar Cliff, Guarneri was active in the Sioux City soccer community coaching club teams and at West High School. He coached the U-19 Sioux City Strikers, the U-16 Sioux City Explosion, among others. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native was extremely involved in the local soccer scene as well as regionally through Olympic Development Programs and as president of the Iowa State Youth Soccer Association, a position he held from 1985-89. From 1986-89, he was the assistant director of the Region II Olympic Development Program. He also served as president of the Iowa Amateur Soccer Association.
