Gene Sherman broadcast play-by-play for the Chargers for more than 20 years. He followed the Chargers throughout their glory days. He watched as several Chargers moved on to play professionally and witnessed several trips to the national tournament and a No. 1 ranking following the 1980-81 season. He also covered sporting events for every Sioux City high school and numerous surrounding high schools in both radio and television platforms. He had been a fixture in Sioux City sportscasting for 50 years, until a reoccurrence of cancer forced him to retire. Sherman was also active in promoting the schools he covered and the athletes he put center stage. He was highly involved with KMNS providing scholarships for high school athletes and helped to oversee the annual sportscaster banquet. His voice and sports knowledge kept audiences at an earshot of the action and his Coaches Corner talk show left listeners informed.
