Jim Hinrich was a starter on Briar Cliff's first intercollegiate basketball team. He played for coaches Jim Deignan (1966-67, 1967-68), Bill Stier (1968-69) and Ray Nacke (1972-73). Hinrich finished his career as the school's third all-time leading scorer with 1,307 points. He averaged 15.4 points per game as a freshman and 15.6 points per game as a sophomore. As a junior, he led the team in scoring, averaging 19.7 points per game. He was named the Chargers' most valuable player and was an all-NAIA District 15 selection following his junior season. Hinrich scored 40 points against Peru State on January 9, 1969 in one of Briar Cliff's top all-time single-game scoring performances. He finished his career ranked fifth in rebounding with 337 caroms.
