Ron Schultz was a member of the first men's intercollegiate basketball team at Briar Cliff. A native of Sioux City and a 1966 graduate of Bishop Heelan High School, Schultz scored the first basket in BC history and went on to finish his career as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,353 points. Following his senior year, Schultz's jersey (#12) was retired. Schultz, a long-time Charger assistant, was twice named most valuable player at Briar Cliff, and also named team captain twice. Schultz led Briar Cliff in scoring as a freshman, averaging 17.9 points per game. He led the Chargers in assists during three of his four seasons. Schultz played two seasons each under Jim Deignan and Bill Stier.

Following his collegiate career, Schultz was invited to tryout with the Dallas Chaparrals of the ABA.
