The Briar Cliff Baseball team split their Sunday doubleheader, defeating the Saint Mary's Spires 10-4 before dropping their contest against Missouri Valley 9-11.
Game one vs Saint Mary's – W, 10-4
The Chargers opened the contest scoring four runs in the top of the first.
Diego Trujillo led off the contest with a double.
Nico Sall reached base on an error and on the play Trujillo scored to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
Cade Marquardt posted an RBI double to put the Chargers up 2-0. RBI doubles from
Cam Riemer and
Cy Patterson put the Chargers up 4-0.
The Spires scored three runs in the next half inning to cut the lead to one.
A tie ball game heading into top the of the eighth, the Chargers carded six runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead.
Raenan Padilla led off the inning with a walk.
Jake Chronic pinch ran and advanced to third off a series of errors. A RBI double from
Rance Bryant broke the scoring tie. A RBI single from
Cade Marquardt put BCU up 6-0 with the bases loaded.
Cam Riemer launched his second grand slam of the weekend to put the Chargers up 10-4.
Johnny Reed in relief tossed four shutout innings and recorded two strikeouts. Riemer went four-for-five from the plate and drove in five runs and scored two runs.
Game two vs Missouri Valley – L, 9-11
The Chargers found themselves in a five-run deficit after the first inning. In the top of the second,
Caleb St. Cyr scored after
Jake Chronic put the ball in play followed by a RBI double from Padilla to card two runs.
The Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the second to increase their lead.
The Chargers continue to work into the Viking lead, in the top of the third Marquardt recorded a RBI double and set up a two-run blast from Riemer to cut the deficit to 9-5.
In the top of the fourth inning, Chronic led off the inning with a solo home run. Padilla scored. The Chargers tied the game following a RBI single from
Damon Schmid in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings scored two runs to take a 11-9 lead.
Padilla, Riemer, and Marquardt each recorded two hits in the contest. Riemer drove in two runs while also drawing a walk.
The Chargers move to 7-8 and will open GPAC play with a four game series against the Morningside Mustangs Friday, March 15. Game one is slated for 12 p.m. with game two to follow shortly after.
