The Charger baseball team split their opening series doubleheader against the Morningside Mustangs Thursday afternoon at the Bishop Mueller Complex. The Chargers won 7-2 in game one before being clipped 3-11 in game two.

Game one – W, 7-2

The Chargers took control in the bottom of the first inning, as
Diego Trujillo led off with a double followed by
Rance Bryant drawing a walk. On a wild pitch, both runners advanced a base with no outs. With one out,
Cade Marquardt got the Chargers rolling with a three-run blast over the left center field wall to put BCU up 3-0.

In the bottom of the second,
Damon Schmid drew a walk followed by Trujillo being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Bryant recorded a bases clearing double to extend the Charger lead to 5-1.

The Cliff added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth,
Jake Chronic recorded a RBI single while also scoring on an error by the Mustangs.

Carter Schorg got the win on the mound for the Chargers, tossing 6.1 innings while surrendering two runs scattered across five hits while recording three strikeouts.

Game two – L, 3-11
The Mustangs quickly built a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. Morningside carded six runs in the top of the third alone.

A sacrifice fly from Marquardt drove in Bryant to put BCU on the board. In the bottom of the fourth, Chronic scored off a Mustang error followed by a RBI single from
Nico Sall to cut the lead to five.

The Mustangs added three runs in the final two innings to take game two.

Cade Nolan took the win on the mound for the Mustangs after tossing six innings and recording eight strikeouts.

Cam Riemer went two-for-three at the plate and drew a walk. Bryant went two-for-four and scored a run in the contest.

The Chargers move to 8-9 (1-1 GPAC), and will return to action tomorrow, as they take on the Mustangs. Game one is slated for 11 a.m. with game two to follow shortly after.
