The Charger baseball team received quality starts from pitchers
Carter Schorg and
Nick Hays as they let BCU to the doubleheader sweep over the Red Raiders of Northwestern Friday afternoon in Orange City, Iowa.
Game one – W, 10-0.
Schorg in game one pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four and scattered three hits across seven innings while allowing just one walk.
In the top of the second inning,
Cy Patterson put the ball in play with the bases loaded and Cam Reimer scored the game's first run.
Damon Schmid followed up the next at-bat with a two RBI double to right field to give Briar Cliff a 3-0 lead early. A RBI single from
Diego Trujillo gave BCU a 4-0 lead.
Grant Devecsery notched a RBI single the next inning to extend the lead to five. A RBI single from
Nico Sall followed by a two RBI double from
Raenan Padilla increased the Charger lead to eight in the top of the fourth.
Rance Bryant capped the scoring off for the Chargers with a two RBI single in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 10.
Game two – W, 8-3
The Red Raiders in game two scored two runs across the first two innings to take a small 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, the Chargers carded a run following a Devecsery RBI sac fly to drive in
Jake Chronic. The Red Raiders in the bottom of the fifth carded one more run to take a 3-1 lead heading into the back half of the contest.
In the top of the sixth, the Charger offense carded six runs. Patterson drew a bases loaded RBI walk and the ensuing play, Padilla scored to tie the game 3-3. Garett Weberg was hit by a pitch and drove in another run and gave BCU a 4-3 lead. Trujillo recorded a two RBI single to extend the lead by two. A two RBI single from Sall gave Briar Cliff a 7-3 lead.
The Chargers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth following a RBI sac fly from Sall.
Hays earned the win on the mound, in nine innings of work allowed three runs across nine hits while striking out 10. Hays surrendered just two walks in the contest.
The Chargers move to 10-11 (3-3 GPAC), and will travel to Yankton, South Dakota to take on the Mount Marty Lancers. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. with game two to follow shortly after.
