The Charger softball team dropped two close contests to open up GPAC play against the Broncos of Hastings in Hastings, Nebraska.

Game One – L, 1-2
The Chargers and Broncos were dead locked in a 0-0 tie for the first nine innings of the contest.
Â
Jessica James opened the contest with a single in the first inning.
Kaydence Kinder laid down a bunt to advance James to second. Kinder was out on the throw to first and James was caught trying to run to third.

In the top of the seventh,
Kaela Persico recorded a one-out single and swiped second to put a runner in scoring position. The Broncos retired the next two batters and stranded Persico on second base.

In the top of the 10
th,
Georgia Krohn laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Persico to third base with one out.
Hailey Yon during her plate appearance to put the ball in play and Persico scored to give BCU a 1-0 lead.

Hastings tied the contest followed up with a one-out RBI single and quickly loaded the bases. An RBI single for the Broncos propelled them to a 2-1 victory.

Krohn pitched a complete game, tossing 9.1 innings and allowed one earned run across seven hits while striking out four.

Game Two – L, 5-6
Â
The Cliff struck first in the top of the third, as Kinder laid down a sacrifice bunt to drive in
Karina Cupples.
In the top of the fourth, Persico led the inning off with a single and stole second. During the play, Persico advanced to third off an error from the Broncos.
Kenadee Loew drea a walk top put runners at the corners. Yon reached base on an error and Persico scored to add to the Charger lead. The Chargers carded another run courtesy of a RBI single from James.

The Broncos rallied back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a one run lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Chargers regained the lead following a two-run blast over the right center field wall from
Skylar Bainter.

Clinging to a one-run lead, the Chargers retired the first Bronco batter in the final frame. Hastings placed a runner in scoring position and tied the ball game following a Charger error. A infield single gave the Broncos the one-run lead to narrowly edge out The Cliff.

Persico, Bainter, and Yon each recorded two hits in the contest. Bainter pitched a complete game, striking out three while allowing just four earned runs.

The Chargers fall to 5-11 (0-2 GPAC), and will travel to Crete, Nebraska for a doubleheader against the Doane Tigers. Game one is slated for 10 a.m. with game two to follow shortly after.
