The Briar Cliff softball team dropped a pair of conference games to the Midland Warriors on Saturday, falling 9–1 in game one and 13–5 in game two.
Game 1 vs. Midland – L, 9–1
BCU opened the day by taking an early lead but was unable to keep pace with Midland in a 9–1 loss.
The Chargers struck first in the second inning as
Sydney Mennenga drove in a run on a groundout. The Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game before pulling ahead in the fourth with a three-run frame highlighted by a double from Pagan and a pair of RBI plays.
Midland added to its lead late, including a solo home run from Watkins in the sixth inning.
MJ Bannon got the start in the circle for Briar Cliff, working 4.1 innings while allowing seven runs on eight hits. Midland's Petrick earned the win, holding the Chargers to one run on four hits over six innings.
Mennenga led Briar Cliff with one RBI, while
Montie Richter,
Lauryn Mattox,
Leah Montes, and
Brooke Oppliger each recorded a hit.
Midland totaled 11 hits in the contest, led by Pagan with three hits, while Schoby drove in three runs.
Game 2 vs. Midland – L, 13–5
The Cliff again jumped out early but couldn't contain Midland's offense in a 13–5 loss in game two.
The Chargers plated two runs in the opening inning, capitalizing on a Midland error and a fielder's choice from Mennenga. Midland responded with a six-run third inning to take control of the game, using timely hitting and capitalizing on defensive miscues.
Briar Cliff continued to battle offensively, collecting six hits and drawing five walks.
Sydney Ebel, Mennenga, and
Kaela Persico each drove in a run, while Mennenga added two stolen bases as part of a four-steal effort by the Chargers.
Aubrey White took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs over 2.2 innings. Midland's Groninga earned the win after striking out seven over five innings.
Briar Cliff returns to action Wednesday April 1, as the Chargers travel to Dakota Wesleyan. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
