Facing a one-run deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Charger baseball team upset the #7 Bellevue Bruins 7-6 on Sisters of St. Francis Field early Sunday afternoon.
Â
In the bottom of ninth inning,
Rance Bryant led-off with a double to right to represent the tying run at second base.
Jared Sitzmann laid down a perfect bunt down the right field line to put runners at the corners with no outs. The Bruins first baseman had the perfect read on the play but was unable to secure the bare-handed grab and Sitzmann reached first safely.
Â
Walker Moore drew a walk and loaded the bases for the Chargers.
Cam Riemer also drew a walk, scoring Bryant to tie the ball game.
Diego Trujillo during his plate appearance hit a hard grounder towards the right side that squeezed past the Bruins' defense to give BCU the walk-off win.
Â
Trujillo got the scoring started for the Cliff earlier in the contest, as his RBI-double along with
Cade Marquardt's RBI-single put the Cliff up 3-0 in the bottom of the first.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Briar Cliff tacked on two runs, following
Easton Cone's deep sac-fly to right field scored
Brayden Artzer.
Damon Schmid the next at-bat hit a RBI-single to left field to drive in
Cy Patterson.
Â
Kyler Steinborn got the start on the bump for the Cliff, tossing six innings while allowing six hits on four earned runs and two strikeouts.
Matthew Hmielewski closed the final three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while recording three strikeouts.
Â
The Chargers improved to 5-4 on the season and will spend their spring break traveling to Tennessee and play seven games during the break. Their next contest will be March 2, as they play a doubleheader against Bethel University in Mckenziee, TN. Game one is slated for 12 p.m.
