CHARGER SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER

The Charger softball team split their double header today, falling to Valley City State 8-0, before beating York later in the day 4-1.

"1-1 on the day but 3-1 on the weekend is a great outcome. I love where our program is heading" Said Head Coach TJ Eadus

Game 1 – L, 8-0

The Vikings jumped out to a early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings in the bottom of the third hit back-to-back homeruns to push the lead to five. VCSU tacked on three more runs in the fourth and fifth inning to impose the run rule.

Karina Cupples recorded the lone hit for the Chargers, while Karis Gifford, Kylee Lukes, and Aubrey Chichurka drew walks in the contest.

Game 2 – W, 4-1

Joliana Mancha got the start in the pitching circle and threw four scoreless innings to begin the contest. York scored in the top of the fifth with two outs to take a 1-0 lead in the contest.

The Cliff responded with four runs the next half-inning, starting with a leadoff single from Hailey Yon. Kieya Belmont reached base on an error to set runners on first and second with no outs with the top of the order coming up. Gifford hit an RBI-double to tie the contest and place runners on second and third. Chichurka the next at bat drove in Belmont on a single and loaded the bases. Mancha drew an RBI-walk on her next at-bat to put the Chargers up 4-1.

Mancha in the seventh retired the side in order to earn her second victory on the season. Mancha threw a complete game, only allowing one run and recorded two strikeouts. Karina Cupples went three-for-three and reached base on all of her plate appearances.

The Chargers move to 4-1 on the season, and return to action next weekend, for a four-game season against NCAA Division two opponent Nebraska Kearney. First doubleheader is slated for next Friday, with game one at 1 p.m.
