The Briar Cliff softball team picked up a pair of wins over the Waldorf Warriors on Friday at Hubbard Park, earning an 8–2 victory in game one before walking off the Warriors 5–4 in game two.
Game 1 vs. Waldorf – W, 8–2
BCU opened the doubleheader with a strong offensive performance, defeating Waldorf 8–2.
The Chargers wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning.
Elizabeth Austin drove in the opening run with a sacrifice bunt before
Sydney Mennenga added an RBI double.
Kaela Persico then delivered the big swing of the inning with a two-run home run to center field, giving Briar Cliff an early 4–0 lead.
BCU extended the advantage in the third inning, taking a 5–0 lead after a Waldorf error, and continued to add insurance runs late.
Shelby Blankenship earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits over seven innings. She struck out three and walked one.
The Chargers totaled 11 hits in the contest, with Blankenship,
Lauryn Mattox,
Leah Montes, and Mennenga each recording two hits. Montes and Persico both drove in two runs, while Briar Cliff put pressure on the base paths with seven stolen bases, including two from Blankenship.
Game 2 vs. Waldorf – W, 5–4
Game two came down to the final inning as Briar Cliff secured a 5–4 walk-off win over Waldorf.
The Warriors took the lead in the fourth inning, plating three runs behind a two-run double from Mauldin and an RBI ground out. Briar Cliff answered in the sixth, tying the game at three on a wild pitch.
Waldorf regained the lead in the top of the seventh, but the Chargers had one final response. Montes delivered a clutch RBI double to tie the game before Austin followed with a walk-off single up the middle to score the winning run.
Julianna Mancha earned the win in relief after tossing two scoreless innings, while
Lauryn Mattox recorded the save.
Aubrey White got the start in the circle for Briar Cliff.
Montes and Austin each collected two hits, with Montes driving in two runs. Briar Cliff also remained aggressive on the bases, swiping four stolen bases, while playing error-free defense.
Due to projected weather the games scheduled for Saturday, April 11, against the College of Saint Mary's have been moved to Wednesday April 15, in Omaha, NE. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
