The Charger women's basketball team dropped their home contest to the visiting Northwestern Red Raiders 78-73 Wednesday evening.
Konnor Sudmann poured in a game-high 26 points on an efficient nine-for-14 from the field.
Kennedy Benne chipped in 19 points and recorded two steals in the effort.
Rachel Langel and
Mallie McNair both added eight points in the contest.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Cliff offense exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders 26-19. Northwestern responded with a 29-point outburst in the third and led by 10 heading into the final period.
Trailing by 11 with 4:06 to play, Benne sank two free throws to cut the lead to nine.
Konnor Sudmann knocked down a mid-range jumper followed by a pair of free throws to bring BCU within striking distance with the score 73-68. With less than a minute to play, Sudmann recorded a steal and scored a layup on the other end to bring the Chargers within two possessions. McNair brought the Chargers within three, as she converted on her corner three attempt with 36 seconds left.
The Red Raiders Molly Schany was sent to the free throw line late in the game, with a chance to ice the contest. Schany missed both free throws, giving BCU a chance to tie the game. McNair's three attempt was offline on the next possession, but
Grace Flanagan grabbed the offensive board and kicked it to
Cadence Davis. Davis' final attempt rattled out, and the Red Raiders were able to close the game out at the free throw line.
The Chargers fall to 17-8 (12-7 GPAC) and will travel to take on the Broncos of Hastings. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
