The Briar Cliff track and field team competed at the Dordt Invite Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa. The day was highlighted by
Hope Wagner and
Ben Jefferies hitting national qualifying standards.
Jefferies hit the NAIA 'A' standard in his first-place 200-meter dash with a time of 21.22.
Wagner's best throw of 13.41m was good for a second-place finish and the NAIA 'B' standard. Wagner also placed fourth in the discus at 36.32m.
"It was a great today, we took a big step towards our goals," said head coach
Scott Barnes. "We qualified in two more events, with
Hope Wagner in the shotput, which was a B standard and
Ben Jefferies in the 200 with an A standard."
Lexus Mosbrucker was second in the javelin with a throw of 37.63 meters.
Isabel Sayler hit a new personal best in the triple jump at 10.77 meters.
Kiana Vereen placed ninth in the 800 with a time of 2:45.55 and tenth in the 200 at 27.67.
Paxon Fleming finished third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.34 and fourth in the 400 hurdles at 56.11.
Robert Amaro and
Ryan Kotey each took third place finishes in the 800 and 200, respectively. Amaro ran his race in 1:57.39 while Kotey finished in 22.24.
The Charger 4x100 team of
Dominic Archer, Jefferies,
Wilton George and
Ryan Kotey placed second with a time of 42.2 seconds. Archer also placed third in the 100 in 11.05 seconds, and fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.36 meters.
Damond Anderson was sixth in the long jump at 6.33m.
Osiel Ochoa's time of 51.99 seconds in the 400 was good for an eighth-place finish.
Brynden Kinnaman and
Lakey Martin finished third and fourth in the shot put with throws of 13.57m and 13.15m, respectively. Kinnaman placed third in the discus at 40.2m, while Martin was fifth at 36.56m.
Gabriel Wyant picked up a third-place finish in the javelin at 51.21 meters.
"Our 4x100 ran a great race,
Isabel Sayler set a PR in the triple jump, Rob ran a great 800, and Paxton was just a few seconds off in the 400 hurdles for the B standard," said Barnes. "We got a lot closer in many events for this early in the season. The season goes fast, and we need to load up more events for nationals, so keeping this progress going is going to be key."
BC will compete at the Sioux City Relays next Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa.
