Chargers sweep St. Ambrose, move to 2-0

Briar Cliff capped off its opening weekend of men's volleyball action with a 3-0 win against St. Ambrose on Saturday. The Chargers downed the Fighting Bees 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 in Davenport, Iowa.

"I'm proud of how the men played a well-rounded game tonight," said BC head coach Trevor Schirman. "We passed much better which allowed our offense to find its groove. We were also tough defensively at both the net and back court."

Each set saw St. Ambrose gain a lead early before Briar Cliff used solid stretches to separate the Chargers from the home squad. After an attack percentage of .208 in the first set, the Blue and Gold blitzed St. Ambrose in the second with a hitting percentage of .391. By night's end, the Chargers had an attack rate of .301 to just .058 for the Fighting Bees.

Nathaniel Johnson led the Cliff attack with 12 kills and a kill rate of .556. Brandon Oswald had double-digit kills for the second straight night, tallying 10 kills and recording an attack percentage of .381. Oswald just missed a double-double as he had nine digs. Noah Marasco-Ayau had eight digs as the Chargers doubled up the Fighting Bees in the category, 32-16. St. Ambrose's Scott MacGillis led all players in kills with 13.

Kyle Cox handled most of the setting duties for the Chargers as he was credited with 26 of BC's 34 assists. He also snuck in a pair of kills on three tries. Jake Snyder led the Fighting Bees in assists with 23.

The serve line was a huge factor in the contest as Briar Cliff finished with four aces to five service errors. St. Ambrose had 11 service errors with just one ace. Kimo Rosa was the only player to record multiple aces, finishing with two.

Briar Cliff also led in blocks, topping St. Ambrose by a 4-2 margin in the category. Oswald, Riley Owen and Johnson each tallied a solo block, while Cox and Rosa teamed up for the other Charger denial.

The win moves the Cliff to 2-0 on the year while St. Ambrose is now 0-1. The Chargers' next contest is the home opener as well as the start of league play. BC will take on Morningside at 7 p.m. in the Newman Flanagan Center.
