BC men's volleyball started the 2020 season with a 3-1 win over Culver-Stockton in Canton, Missouri Friday night. After a rocky first set, the Chargers took the next three games in dominant fashion to start the season 1-0. Setter
Kyle Cox recorded 49 assists in the victory, putting him in a tie for third in Briar Cliff's record book for single-match sets in his first contest for the Blue and Gold.
"We were a bit rough around the edges and not as sharp as we need to be," said head coach
Trevor Schirman. "The men did a great job taking advice from the bench and executing adjustments."
After going up 21-11 in game one, the Chargers allowed the Wildcats back into the game with an 11-0 run and Culver-Stockton went on to win the set 28-26. BC again jumped out to a big lead in the second set, but this time held held onto the margin and won 25-13. The Cliff took game three 25-22 and game four 25-9.
Brandon Oswald had a career-high 21 kills in the match and recorded an attack percentage of .415, the best numbers of all players. The senior also tallied 10 digs on the night. Nate Johnson added 17 kills to go with nine digs and
Riley Owen was the final Charger with double digit kills at 10.
Noah Marasco-Ayau had 17 digs.
Erin Lee had a team-high 18 kills for Culver Stockton and five blocks. Alex Heaney dished out 31 assists.
The Chargers' road trip will continue as the team travels to Davenport, Iowa Saturday for a 7 p.m. match against St. Ambrose.
