The Briar Cliff women's volleyball team earned two sweeps Saturday, taking down Southwestern and Clarke at the William Penn Tournament in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Chargers improved their record to 5-3 on the season with a pair of victories.
Game 1 vs Southwestern – W, 3-0
Briar Cliff opened the day with a strong defensive performance, sweeping Southwestern in straight sets. The Chargers recorded 11 total blocks and held the Jinx to just .033 hitting percentage.
The Chargers set the tone with a 25-20 win in the opening frame, then dominated the second set 25-9, hitting .500 with 8 kills and no errors. Briar Cliff secured the sweep with a final set 25-20, powered by timely kills from
Tamika Eastman and
Caton Firkins.
Eastman led the attack with 10 kills, while
Aliyah Basham and Firkins chipped in 4 apiece. At the net,
Kya Bradfield and Basham both tallied 4 blocks, while setters
Kylie Hart and
Iwalani Beltran combined for 29 assists.
Avery Beller paced the defense with 13 digs.
Game 2 vs Clarke – W, 3-0
The Chargers capped off the day with another sweep, defeating Clarke in three sets while hitting .337 as a team.
Briar Cliff jumped out to a commanding start, taking the opening set 25-11 behind the efficient .500 hitting percentage. The Chargers followed with a 25-18 win in the second frame and closed the match with a 25-23 victory.
Emma Brenelli led the offense with 11 kills, while
Brooklyn Voss added 6 and Basham contributed 5 on a .714 hitting. Voss was a standout at the net with 4 blocks, while
Isabelle Lenz led the serving game with 3 aces. Hart and Beltran directed the offense with 19 and 17 assists, respectively, while Beller added 7 digs in the win.
The Chargers return to action this Friday in Peru, Nebraska, at the Peru Triangular, with games scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
