The Briar Cliff women's volleyball team opened up play at the William Penn Tournament with a sweep over Graceland and a five-set battle against William Penn. The Chargers now sit 3-3 on the season.
Game 1 vs Graceland – W, 3-0
The Chargers turned in one of their most efficient performances of the year, defeating Graceland in straight sets. Briar Cliff hit .460 as a team with just four errors, while holding the Yellowjackets to a .173 hitting percentage.
Aliyah Basham led the way with seven kills on a .700 hitting clip, and
Tamika Eastman followed with six kills of her own. Defensively,
Brooklyn Voss was a force at the net with eight total blocks, while
Avery Beller collected five digs. The Chargers finished with a 10-1 advantage in blocks and seven service aces in the sweep.
Game 2 vs William Penn – L, 3-2
The Chargers came out firing in the second game of the day, taking the opening sets 25-16 and 25-23 against William Penn. The Statesmen, however, rallied back to win the final three frames of the day.
Eastman paced the Chargers with 13 kills, while Basham and
Emma Brenelli each added nine.
Aubrey Hoeft was also able to chip in five of her own on a .400 hitting percentage. Voss and Basham anchored the defense at the net, combining for a total of 19 block assists.
Setter
Kylie Hart directed the offense with 22 assists, while
Iwalani Beltran added 16.
Georgianna Wenzel led the back court with 14 digs, followed closely by Beller with 13.
The Chargers return to play tomorrow as they take on Southwestern College and Clarke University at the William Penn Tournament. Game one is set for 9:00 a.m. with game two at 1:00 p.m.
