CHARGER SOFTBALL SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

The Charger softball team rally in the late stages was halted by the Dakota State Trojans, falling 6-5 in the first game, before pouring in 11 runs in their contest against York to defeat the Panthers 11-1.

Game 1 vs Dakota State, L – 6-5

Trailing 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, The Chargers led-off the inning with a single from Karina Cupples. Jessica James reached base on an error and Cupples moved to third. A bunt from Kaydence Kinder loaded the base for the Chargers with no outs.

Kylie Wilhelms put the ball in play to put the Chargers on the board. The next at-bat Kaela Persico belted a three-run blast to cut the lead to two.

The Chargers trailed by one heading into the final inning following a RBI single from Rylee Cain. The game tying run was halted at third in the bottom of the sixth. The Trojans retired the side in the final inning to preserve the victory.

James went two-for-four at the plate and scored two runs and stole one base. Georgia Krohn was tabbed with the loss after tossing four innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Game 2 vs York (NE) – W, 11-1

The Chargers started off strong in the first inning, carding five runs. Jessica James led off with a single. Shortly after runners were at the corners following a York error. Another error by York gave James the
Skylar Bainter recorded a three RBI single along with a RBI single to put the Chargers up 5-0.


A solo home run from Wilhelms followed by two RBI double from Bainter propelled the Chargers to a 8-0. Persico belted her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to put the Chargers up 11-0.

Persico went two-for-three at the plate and drew two walks.

Bainter took the win on the pitching circle, surrendering just two hits and one earned run across 5.1 innings of work.

The Chargers move to 1-3 this season, and will return to action tomorrow morning at the ASB Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa to take on Dickinson State 9 a.m. and Minnesota Crookston at 11 a.m.
