Briar Cliff scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and held off a late Doane rally to secure a 28–21 GPAC victory Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field. The Chargers honored their seniors prior to the start of the contest.
E'mond Pittman paced the Chargers' offense with two rushing touchdowns, including a 2-yard score in the third quarter that tied the game at 14–14. Quarterback Brock Saya went 19-of-33 for 219 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Michael Hensley for a go-ahead passing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
On the Chargers second drive of the contest, the offense used a eight play 69-yard drive with Saya going three-for-three passing for 59 yards through the air during the stretch to take a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Keivon Booker sealed the win for Briar Cliff with a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 28–14 with 3:00 left to play. Booker also added three tackles on defense.
Doane quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, both to wideout John DeRiso, who finished with nine catches for 172 yards and three total scores. Hartman also added 40 yards on the ground, while running back Blake Allen contributed 74 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Defensively, Dayton Harrell and Kyle Gibson led the Chargers with seven tackles each. Briar Cliff forced two turnovers and dominated time of possession 34:18 to 25:42.
Briar Cliff (5–4, 4–4 GPAC) converted 9 of 17 third downs and went 3-for-3 in the red zone. Doane (1–7, 1–7 GPAC) outgained the Chargers 397-282 in total offense but committed two costly interceptions, including the game-clincher.
The Chargers improve to 5-4 (4-4 GPAC) and will travel to Seward, Nebraska next Saturday to take on the Concordia Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
