The Charger men's basketball team fell in overtime 84-80 to the visiting Concordia Bulldogs Saturday afternoon inside the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers trailed 43-28 at the break and rallied back to force overtime.
Trailing by 12 with 10 minutes left to play,
Matthew Stilwill knocked down a three off an assist from
Wil Lugar that sparked a 13-3 run, and the Chargers trailed 64-62 with 6:59 remaining. CUNE took a 73-71 lead following a free throw from Tristan Smith. Both teams were held scoreless until the final 10 seconds remaining in the contest.
Briar Cliff got the ball in Stilwill's hands coming out of timeout, and Stillwill scored the game-tying basket with two seconds remaining to force overtime.
Jaxon Wingert in overtime knocked down a pair of free throws to answer the Bulldogs opening basket. Lugar drilled a three with 3:08 left in regulation off an assist from Stilwill to cut the Bulldog lead 79-78. Concordia's Bradley Bennett iced the game away, converting a free throw attempt with eight seconds to give the Bulldogs the narrow 84-80 win.
Stilwill led the Chargers with 23 points and grabbed five rebounds and recorded three steals. Stilwill shot 52% from the field and knocked down a pair of threes. Lugar scored 20 points and recorded a team-high seven assists and shot 57% from the field and went four-for-eight from three. He also hauled in six rebounds.
Blake Sindelar had a near double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds while shooting 50% from the field. Winger finished with 11 points and grabbed five rebounds while going four-for-six from the field.
The Chargers fall to 9-8 (4-5 GPAC) and will return to action next Wednesday, as they host the Warriors of Waldorf inside the Newman Flanagan Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
