Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Turn Back Bruins In Thriller

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – It was a battle for 40 minutes as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (5-5) beat Bellevue (6-4) 72-69, Wednesday night at the Newman Flanagan Center.  It was the third straight win at home for BCU.

Briar Cliff and Bellevue traded buckets for the first eight minutes.  The Bruins jumped ahead, 27-20 at the 10:18 mark.

Graduate student Jamison Helmers hit a bucket and free throw to pull the Chargers to one, 31-30 with 6:13 to go.  Bellevue scored the last six points to lead at the break 44-38.

In the second half, the Bruins countered every BCU surge.  Down 61-54 at the 8:37 mark, Briar Cliff decided that enough was enough.

With 6:11 to go, graduate student Matthew Stilwill knocked down three free throws to tie the game at 61.  The Chargers led the rest of the way until Bellevue hit a deep three to tie it at 69 with seven seconds left.

Stilwill was fouled attempting a triple.  He hit all three charity shots with 1.9 seconds left.  Junior Blake Sindelar stole the inbound pass at mid-court to seal the win.  BCU outscored the Bruins 18-8 over the last eight minutes.

The Chargers pulled down 16 defensive rebounds to five offensive boards for the Bruins.  This is the tenth game this season that BCU has had at least a 2-to-1 margin.  BCU shot 51.2% from the floor.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I'm really proud of the guys for the fight we played with in the second half, particularly down the stretch. We got a couple of big stops late. I thought Matt (Stilwill) was big time tonight, both with his play and leadership."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill had 27 points, nine rebounds (seven defensive), five steals and shot 8-of-16 from the floor and 10-of-10 from the line. Helmers added 14 points.

For Bellevue, Nigel Wilson scored 18 points.

Briar Cliff returns to GPAC play on the road, Saturday, Dec. 7 taking on Concordia (Neb.).  The game is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m.
