Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Briar Cliff Falls Short Of Catching Tigers

MITCHELL, South Dakota – A furious rally fell short as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (2-2 GPAC, 4-5) lost 76-68 to Dakota Wesleyan (2-1 GPAC, 6-2), Tuesday night at the Corn Palace.

For the first 12 minutes of the game, Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan traded buckets.  Junior Ikenna Ude-Smith hit a driving lay-up to close the gap to 14-12 at the 7:58 mark.

The Tigers scored five straight points to go up by seven.  DWU maintained a five to seven point lead the rest of the half.

In the second half, Dakota Wesleyan pushed the pace.  Up 64-46 with 7:03 to go, it appeared the Tigers had it sealed up.

Sophomore Colby Collison dropped one in from downtown to get the rally train started.  Graduate student Matthew Stilwill got a three-point play the hard way; a bucket and free throw.

That cut the margin to three, 71-68 with 48 seconds left.  DWU scored the last five points to hold on.

The Chargers pulled down 20 defensive rebounds to 10 offensive boards for the Tigers.  This is the ninth game this season that BCU has had at least a 2-to-1 margin.  DWU shot 26.9% from behind the arc.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I love the fight we played with late tonight. The Corn Palace is a tough place to win and finding ourselves down 18 is hard to come back from. There's a lot we can build off from this.  We need to come back from Thanksgiving break hungry to keep improving."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill and freshman Jaxson Wingert scored 17 points each.  Collison came off the bench to score 14 points with four triples, his second straight double-figure game off the bench.

For Dakota Wesleyan, Randy Rosenquist had 21 points and five steals.

Briar Cliff stays on the road, Saturday, Nov. 30 to play Southwest Minnesota State.  The game, which is an exhibition, is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
