Chargers Clash With Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. – Four players scored in double-figures as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team lost 80-69 to NCAA Division II #22 Southwest Minnesota State, Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game at the R/A Facility.

For the first nine minutes of the game, Briar Cliff and SW Minnesota State were playing a chess match. With 11 minutes to go, senior Karter Lein hit a pair of free throws.

That sparked a 9-2 run to put the Chargers up 23-15 at the seven-minute mark. Graduate student Matthew Stilwill hit a driving lay-up to make it 34-24 BCU with 2:52 to go. The Mustangs closed on a 9-2 burst to trail 36-33 at halftime.

Over the first three minutes of the second half, Briar Cliff and SMSU kept the game tight. Stilwill scored in the paint to ignite an 8-1 run to put the Chargers up 48-41 at the 15:38 mark.

SW Minnesota State outscored BCU 33-13 over the next 10 minutes to lead 74-61 with 5:08 to go. Briar Cliff refused to go quiet into the night.

Freshman Jaxson Wingert hit a layup to cut the margin to seven 74-67 at the 2:37 mark. The Mustangs scored four straight points to seal the game.

"I thought our guys competed at a high level today. Going on the road against a top 25 team is always tough, and even when we got down 13 in the second half, we fought back to give ourselves a chance. I feel we took a step forward in today's exhibition and this will help us moving forward."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill had 22 points and three steals with four 3-pointers, graduate student Jamison Helmers scored 16 points with five assists, four steals and four triples and Wingert had 12 points. Sophomore Colby Collison scored 10 points off the bench, his third straight double-digit game.

For SW Minnesota State, Dunwa Omot scored 18 points.

Briar Cliff returns home, Wednesday, Dec. 4 taking on Bellevue. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
