Kenna Mongan poured in 23 points as the 17
th ranked Chargers defeated rival Morningside 84-75 inside the Newman Flanagan Center Wednesday evening.
Grace Flanagan started the game off strong, knocking down back-to-back three-point attempts in the contest. A jumper from
Adrianna Webster followed by a triple put the Chargers up 11-6 early in the contest. A jumper by Flanagan at the end of the quarter put the Chargers up by 15 heading into quarter number two.
The Mustangs would claw their way back into the contest in the second and third quarter, as they led 55-54 heading into the final frame.
Mongan in the fourth took over, as she scored 12 points while knocking down two threes and going a perfect six-for-six in the stretch. Midway through the fourth, Webster and
Rachel Langel knocked down back-to-back jumpers to put BCU up by 10 with 3:37 left to play.
Morningside's Ella Wragge split her free throw attempts with 1:08 remaining in the contest to cut the Charger lead down to four. On the ensuing possession, Mongan buried a three with 33 seconds left in the contest to put the Chargers up 78-71. Mongan was able to ice away the game at the free throw line to preserve the victory for The Cliff.
The Chargers shot 47% from the field and went 13-for-28 from beyond-the-arc in the contest.
Webster had a near double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds while recording one block.
Mallie McNair added 14 points while going four-for-seven from downtown. Flanagan and Langel added 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Chargers improve to 5-0 on the season (2-0 GPAC) and will return to action this Saturday, as they host the Broncos of Hastings. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
