Briar Cliff Falls Short of Catching The Comets

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – It was an old-fashioned shootout as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (2-3) lost 112-104 in overtime to Mayville State (3-3), Monday night at the Newman Flanagan Center.

For the first six minutes, Briar Cliff and Mayville State played on even terms.  At the 13:43 mark, junior Ikenna Ude-Smith hit a jumper in the paint.

That started a run of seven straight points to put the Chargers up 26-17 with 13:03 to go.  Mayville State slowly chipped away and pulled to five, 35-30 at the 7:07 mark.

BCU had a 10-point lead all but 23 seconds of the last six minutes of the half.  Graduate student Jamison Helmers knocked a triple down from the Mississippi River at the buzzer to make it 54-42, Briar Cliff.

The Chargers looked to be in control, up 87-73 at the 6:54 mark of the second half.  The Comets began to fight back and tied the game at 95-95 with 1:21 to go.  Graduate student Matthew Stilwill had a three-pointer just miss at the buzzer.

BCU and MSU traded triples in the first minute of overtime.  From there, Mayville State scored six straight points and led the rest of the way.

Offensively, the Chargers shot 50.8% from the floor and 48.3% from behind the arc.  BCU pulled down 21 defensive rebounds to 10 offensive boards for the Comets.  This is the fifth straight game that the Chargers have had at least a 2-to-1 margin.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
