Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Fall To Warriors

FREMONT, Neb. – Four players scored in double-figures as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (0-1 GPAC, 2-4) lost 86-76 to Midland (1-0 GPAC, 5-1), Saturday afternoon at Wikert Event Center.

For the first three minutes, Briar Cliff and Midland went back-and-forth.  Freshman Jaxson Wingert hit a tough shot in the paint.

That started a 12-4 run to put the Chargers up 18-8 at the 13:54 mark.  The Warriors chipped away and tied the game at 22-22 with 9:49 left.

BCU and Midland traded buckets from there.  Sophomore Colby Collison dropped one in from the rafters.  That put Briar Cliff up 33-32 at halftime.

In the second half, the Chargers and Warriors slugged it out for the first ten minutes. Graduate student Matthew Stilwill scored in traffic to put BCU up 66-56 with 8:09 left in the game.

Midland chipped away, pulling to three 70-67 with five minutes to go.  The Warrior scored 12 straight points over the next four minutes to seal the game.

Offensively, the Chargers shot 50.8% from the floor for the second straight game.  BCU pulled down 23 defensive rebounds to just four offensive boards for the Warriors.  That was a significant factor in Midland having only three second chance points.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
We had some really good stretches today, unfortunately we weren't able to sustain for 40 minutes. We must focus on finishing games right now.  A bright spot today was the play of Jaxon (Wingert).  I thought he really set the tone for us offensively."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill had 18 points and six assists, Wingert had 17 points, two steals and was 8-of-10 from the floor, junior Blake Sindelar had 12 points and Collison scored 10 points.

For Midland, Jake Orr had 20 points and eight rebounds.

Briar Cliff returns home, Wednesday, Nov. 20 taking on Morningside.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m.
