Briar Cliff Corrals Mustangs At Buzzer

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Graduate student Matthew Stilwill knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (1-1 GPAC, 3-4) upset Morningside (RV) (1-1 GPAC, 5-1) 82-79, Wednesday night at the Flanagan Newman Center.

For the first four minutes, Briar Cliff and Morningside battled on even terms.  At the 16:02 mark, the Mustangs went on a 12-2 run.

That put MU up, 17-7 with 12:42 left in the first half.  At the 11:54 mark, Stilwill dropped one in from the ozone to close to four, 17-13.

Morningside led by at least six points the last 11 minutes and took a 45-33 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Chargers came at the Mustangs like a buzz saw.  Freshman Jaxson Wingert made a tough shot in the paint.

That closed a 18-6 burst and tied the game at 51-51 at the 15:13 mark.  It went back-and-forth until there was 10:28 left and MU was up 61-60.

The Chargers scored nine straight points and looked in control at 69-61 at the 8:04 mark.  The pendulum swung the other way.  Morningside slowly chipped away and took the lead at 76-74 with 3:13 left.

The Mustangs answered every BCU bucket.  Down 79-76, junior Blake Sindelar dropped one in from the east side of the state to tie it up at the 1:15 mark.

Junior Wil Lugar blocked a shot and Briar Cliff got the rebound with just 4.3 seconds left.  Stilwill drove and dropped in a long-range bomb at the buzzer for the win.

Offensively, the Chargers were hot from everywhere; 52.5% from the floor, 45.8% from behind the arc and 87.5% at the line.  BCU pulled down 28 defensive rebounds to just four offensive boards for the Mustangs.  The Chargers did a strong job defending Justin Sitti who scored just six points after coming into the game, averaging over 20.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I'm really proud of the way our guys came back in the second half.  I thought we showed a lot of resolve in the first five minutes after halftime.  Most importantly, we really displayed a lot of togetherness.  Will (Lugar) blocking the shot late in the game gave us the opportunity for the win.  Blake (Sindelar) was really the X Factor force in the second half of the game with his offense.  However, we got good production from numerous guys.  We showed that we are capable of being a pretty good team.  I feel this is a moment that we can use to really grow and push forward as a team."

For Briar Cliff, Sindelar had 29 points, nine rebounds, blocked two shots, hit three triples and was 11-of-18 from the floor.  Stilwill had 18 points with five 3-pointers while graduate student Jamison Helmers and Wingert had 10 points apiece.

For Morningside, Joey Skoff had 21 points.

Briar Cliff remains home, Saturday, Nov. 23 taking on Hastings.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m.
