Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Fence In Broncos

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Four players were in double-figures for points as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (2-1 GPAC, 4-4) beat Hastings (0-2 GPAC, 1-3) 82-65, Saturday afternoon at the Flanagan Newman Center.

Briar Cliff came out of the gates running, scoring the first seven points of the game.  Hastings went on an 8-2 run to make it 9-8 at the 14:08 mark.

The Chargers led the whole first half with their lead between three and eight points.

In the second half, junior Blake Sindelar knocked down two free throws.  That put BCU up, 47-34 at the 14:13 mark.

The Broncos refused to quit and began a slow and steady comeback.  Hastings pulled to four, 54-50 with 11:35 to go.  Graduate student Matthew Stilwill hit a bucket in traffic that started a 17-7 burst that sealed the game.

Offensively, the Chargers shot well once again; 53.1% from the floor, 47.8% from behind the arc and 86.1% at the line.  BCU pulled down 24 defensive rebounds to just four offensive boards for the Broncos.  The Chargers allowed Hastings to shoot just 16.7% on triples.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I'm really happy with our guys effort tonight in a game that was a little sloppy at times.  I thought Jaxson (Wingert) did a really good job setting the tone for us. Obviously, Colby (Collison) was huge off the bench shooting 6-of-7 from three-point range. Karter (Lein) gave us some valuable minutes off the bench.  He is one of those guys that doesn't score a lot, but gives us a strong defensive presence for us when he comes in."

For Briar Cliff, sophomore Colby Collison came off the bench to score 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.  Sindelar and Freshman Jaxson Wingert scored 16 points each with graduate student Jamison Helmers scoring 12 points.

For Hastings, DaRon Hall scored 28 points.

Briar Cliff hits the road, Tuesday, Nov. 26 to play Dakota Wesleyan.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m.
