Briar Cliff Falls To Mustangs

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-14 GPAC, 6-20) lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-15) to #32 Morningside (8-6 GPAC, 20-9), Wednesday night at RVSC-Allee Gym.

In the first set, Briar Cliff and Morningside battled on evens terms until 9-9. The Mustangs reeled off an 6-2 run to lead 15-11.

Senior Taryn Nothem bounced the ball off the block. That was the first of three straight points for the Chargers to make it 15-14.  Morningside put up a 5-2 string that effectively sealed the set. 

In the second set, the Mustangs stormed out to a 7-2 lead.  BCU settled and came firing back.

Sophomore Emma Brenelli went cross-court for the kill.  That ended a 7-3 burst to make it 10-9.  Morningside went on an 8-1 run to take control.

In the third set, Briar Cliff and the Mustangs slugged it out early on.  Brenelli put the ball away off a set from senior Olivia Corey,

That pulled the Chargers to one, 7-6.  The Mustangs scored five straight to seal the match.

For Briar Cliff, Brenelli had seven kills and hit .316 while senior Kiersten Baker and freshman Aubrey Hoeft had four blocks apiece.  Junior Avery Beller had 15 digs, her 27th consecutive double-digit dig match.

For Morningside, Claire Wilson had 13 kills.

Briar Cliff closes out the home schedule, Saturday, Nov. 2 taking on Waldorf.  The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
