Chargers Slug It out With Warriors

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Sophomores Aliyah Basham and Emma Brenelli had double-digit kills as the Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-15 GPAC, 6-21) lost 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 28-26, 26-24) to Waldorf (5-10 GPAC, 11-13), Saturday night at the Newman Flanagan Center.

In the first set, Briar Cliff and Waldorf traded points in the early going.  Up 10-9, the Warriors reeled off seven straight points to effectively end the set. 

In the second set, It was another tactical set until 12-10, Chargers.  BCU went on a 5-1 run to lead 16-11.

Waldorf closed the gap to one, 16-15.  Brenelli blasted the ball to the floor.  That started a 5-1 burst to put Briar Cliff up 21-16.

The Warriors scored five straight to make it 21-21.  The Chargers moved ahead 24-23, however, Waldorf got a kill to tie it up.  BCU forced two errors to take the second set.

In the third set, Briar Cliff came out blasting away getting a 7-3 lead.  The Warriors came back to tie it at 10-10.

After that, the Chargers and Waldorf traded points like a seesaw going up and down.  At 24-24, freshman Aubrey Hoeft found the line to put BCU up 25-24.

The Warriors fought off the set point.  Brenelli got a kill off a nice set from sophomore Kylie Hart to put Briar Cliff up 26-25.  Waldorf then stunned the Chargers with three straight points to take the set.

In the fourth set, BCU and the Warriors were matching points until 9-9.  Basham fired the ball cross court to close out a 5-1 burst.  That put Briar Cliff up 14-10.

Waldorf came back to tie the set at 16-16.  Once again, the two teams slugged it out trading points.

Senior Kiersten Baker and Brenelli stuffed the Warrior hitter to tie the set at 24-24.  Back-to-back kills gave Waldorf the win.

For Briar Cliff, Basham had 14 kills and Brenelli finished with 12 kills.  Freshman Aubrey Hoeft hit .278 and had six blocks while senior Olivia Corey had 24 assists and 12 digs.  Defensively, junior Avery Beller had 23 digs, senior Anesa Davenport had 17 digs and senior Taryn Nothem had 14 digs.  Beller pushed her double-digit dig match streak to 28.

For Waldorf, Kenzie Kidd had 19 kills and 25 digs while Kaylee Kidd had 24 digs.

Briar Cliff closes out the 2024 season on the road, Tuesday, Nov. 5 playing Dakota Wesleyan.  The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
