Briar Cliff Closes Season With Tigers

MITCHELL, South Dakota – The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-16 GPAC, 6-22) lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-20) to Dakota Wesleyan (7-9 GPAC, 13-15), Tuesday night at the Christen Family Athletic Center.

In the first set, Briar Cliff and Dakota Wesleyan played a strategic game early on. Sophomore Aliyah Basham and freshman Aubrey Hoeft stuffed the Tiger hitter.

That tied the set at 4-4. DWU went on an 11-2 run to seal the set.

In the second set, neither the Chargers nor Dakota Wesleyan could break away. Freshman Marta Alves blasted the ball right down the middle to close the gap to 14-13. The Tigers went on a 5-1 burst to take control.

In the third set, BCU took the early lead at 6-4. Dakota Wesleyan scored six straight points to go up 10-6.

Briar Cliff battled back and tied the game at 12-12 off a block by sophomore Emma Brenelli and Hoeft. The Tigers took the lead back at 17-14.

Junior Isabelle Lenz slammed the ball down to the court. That started a run of three straight points to make it 17-17.

At 19-19, DWU reeled off four straight points to seal the match.

For Briar Cliff, Hoeft hit .273 with five blocks. Junior Avery Beller had 16 digs, her 29^th consecutive double-digit dig match. Senior Olivia Corey tallied 16 assists to finish with 2013 assists during her collegiate career.

For Dakota Wesleyan, Abagail Brunsing and Emily Dale had 14 kills apiece.

Briar Cliff has closed out the 2024 season.
