Briar Cliff Opens Up The Season

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Three players scored in double figures as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (0-1) lost 89-72 to Bethel (Kan.) (1-0), Friday night at the Newman Flanagan Center.

For the first five minutes, Bethel and Briar Cliff played on even terms.  Down 9-8, the Threshers scored seven points in a row to go up 15-9 at the 13:57 mark.

Junior Ikenna Ude-Smith hit a bucket in the paint to get the Charger comeback started with 13:34 to go.  Junior Wil Lugar hit a pair of charity tosses.

That closed out a 22-6 burst to put BCU up 31-21 at the 6:22 mark.  Bethel began to slowly chip away at the Briar Cliff lead.  The Threshers scored with six seconds left to take a 40-39 lead at the half.

In the second half, the Chargers and Bethel traded buckets for the first three minutes.  Freshman Jaxson Wingert scored a tough bucket in the paint to close the gap to 46-45 at the 17:13 mark.  The Threshers scored 14 straight points to effectively seal the game.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"Tonight obviously didn't go how we hoped. Give a lot of credit to Bethel.  They played a great game. I thought we played really well offensively in spurts in the first half, but we weren't able to sustain it for long enough periods of time. Defensively, we have a lot of work to do. We'll get back to work and move forward."

For Briar Cliff, graduate student Matthew Stilwill had 16 points, six assists and two steals, Wingert scored 15 points and Ude-Smith scored 13 points.  Graduate student Jamison Helmers scored nine points and was three-of-five from behind the arc.

For Bethel, Nick Bonner had 21 points and three steals and Carmelo Yakubu had 16 points and five assists.

Briar Cliff hits the road, Thursday, Oct. 31 taking on Valley City State.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
