Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chargers Fall Short Of Vikings

VALLEY CITY, North Dakota – Graduate students Jamison Helmers and Matthew Stilwill score over 20 points each as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (0-2) furious comeback attempt fell short, 85-78 to Valley City State (3-0), Thursday night at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Briar Cliff came out of the gates running.  Freshman Jaxson Wingert hit a running jumper in the paint.  That put the Chargers up 10-0 at the 17:35 mark.

Valley City State turned around and reeled off 12 straight points to lead 12-10 with 14:25 to go.  BCU and the Vikings went back-and-forth until 17-17 with 11:11 left in the first half.

VCSU went on a 16-7 run to lead 32-24 at the 6:40 mark.  Valley City State maintained an 8-to-11-point lead over the rest of the half.

Over the first four minutes of the second half, everything was falling for the Vikings.  VCSU led 60-36 at the 16:04 mark when Briar Cliff began to battle back into contention.

Junior Blake Sindelar dropped one in from the ozone layer.  That closed out a 23-4 run to pull the Chargers to five, 64-59 with 8:02 to go.

Valley City State managed to push the lead to 11, 79-68 at the 1:52 mark.  BCU began a final run at the Vikings.

Sindelar scored a tough bucket in traffic to close to 83-78 with 26 seconds to go.  VCSU hit two free throws to hold on.

The Chargers had a strong night on the defensive end of rebounding, pulling down 29 defensive boards to just five offensive for the Vikings.  This was a huge factor in VCSU scoring just five second chance points.

MBB Jamison Helmers Bethel 2324

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I was really proud of the fight we showed in the second half after finding ourselves down 24. The guys battled to give ourselves some chances late in the game. The lesson we need to take is not finding ourselves down big and playing with the urgency of the last 15 minutes for a full 40.  We will bounce back and get back to work tomorrow to prepare for Jamestown on Saturday."

For Briar Cliff, Helmers scored 23 points, was 6-of-6 from the line and hit five triples while Stilwill had 21 points, 10 rebounds (all defensive) and three steals and was 6-of-11 from the floor.  Sindelar finished with 13 points.

For Valley City State, Agwa Nywesh scored 20 points.

Briar Cliff keeps to the road, Saturday, Nov. 2 taking on Jamestown.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
