Briar Cliff Knocks Down The Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, North Dakota – A big play late paved the way as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (1-2) beat NCAA Division II Jamestown (0-1) 72-66, Saturday night at the Harold Newman Arena.

The first half was an extremely close contest as the lead was more than five points only for one minute total.  There was a total of two ties and nine lead changes.  Briar Cliff led 31-29 at halftime.

In the second half, junior Blake Sindelar used his long-distance calling call.  That put the Chargers up 36-29 at the 18:58 mark.

Jamestown came back to cut the margin to two, 36-34 with 18:05 to go.  From that point, BCU held a two-to-six-point lead for the next eight minutes.

Briar Cliff looked to be in control, up 61-52 at the 4:59 mark.  The Jimmies refused to quit and battled back.

Jamestown hit a 3-pointer to make it 69-66 with 17 seconds left.  The Chargers got a rebound off a missed free throw however, they turned it over with 15 seconds left.

Graduate student Matthew Stilwill produced a steal and was quickly fouled.  He hit two charity tosses with 14 seconds left to seal the game.

The Chargers shot 46.6% from the floor and 81.3% from the line.  Defensively, BCU held the Jimmies to just 35.5% from the floor and 21.2% behind the arc.

It was another impressive performance on defensive rebounds.  The Chargers had 33 defensive boards to 14 offensive rebounds for Jamestown.  This is the third straight game they have had at least a 2-to-1 difference in this category.

Briar Cliff head coach Mark Svagera
"I'm proud of the effort our guys put in tonight to find a way to get a win.  I thought it took a lot of resiliency and toughness, especially after the first part of the trip didn't go all that well on Thursday night.  When we needed to get a couple big stops late, I was really proud of the urgency we defended with.  Matt (Stilwill) really scored for us at a high-level tonight.  He had a big defensive play for us with 14 seconds left that produced two points to seal it.  Ikenna (Ude-Smith) gave us a huge boost off the bench.  We're going to keep working to get better."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill had 28 points, two steals and all six of his rebounds were defensive while Sindelar finished with 11 points.  Junior Ikenna Ude-Smith came off the bench scoring 16 points and shooting 6-of-10 from the floor.

For Jamestown, Silas Bennion had 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Briar Cliff stays on the road, Wednesday, Nov. 6, playing Mount Mercy.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
