VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR AT MORNINGSIDE

The Briar Cliff volleyball team won the first set over Morningside Tuesday, but fell to the Mustangs 3-1 in Allee Gym.

The Chargers were the first to pull away in the first set. Trailing 9 to 11, Sami Wasmund started a 6-0 Charger run with two straight kills. Wasmund added a block alongside Kiersten Baker in the run as they took a 15-11 lead, forcing a Mustang timeout. Morningside tied it a 17-17, but the Chargers regrouped following a timeout. Toria Andre, Wasmund and Makynna Snow tallied kills as they grabbed a 21-18 lead. Wasmund slammed the door shut on set one with three straight kills to take a 25-20 win.

The Chargers started quick in set two, taking a 5-1 lead, but the Mustangs would begin to build a lead. Facing set point, Wasmund tallied a kill to make the score 18-24, and scored points on back-to-back blocks from Baker and Wasmund. The Mustangs would close out the set, 25-20, with a kill.

The third set went back-and-forth with the Chargers holding an early 10-7 lead, following a four-point run. Three straight points were courtesy of Wasmund and Andre who secured a block and then a kill a piece. The Chargers pulled ahead to a 19-15 lead, but after a BC timeout the Chargers scored three straight with a kill from Andre and two from Snow. The Mustangs scored six of the last seven points to win 25-19.

Looking to extend the match to five sets, the Chargers ran out to a 13-8 lead. The Mustangs scored six straight to tie the set and were the first to 20 points following a BC error. A kill from Filimaua Afatia and an ace from Wasmund knotted the score at 21-all, but four of the next five points went to the Mustangs to close out their 3-1 win.

"Sami Wasmund had a great game tonight, and we have been asking her to do some new things outside of her comfort zone," said head coach Lindsey Weatherford. "Tonight she really put all those together and was able to score at will against Morningside."

Wasmund had a team high 15 kills on a .324 hitting percentage with four blocks and two aces. Snow recorded 12 kills and three digs. Olivia Corey handed out 25 assists, while Yenne Schepers had 17. Avery Beller had a game high 27 digs and four assists.

"Avery Beller has been a consistent defensive prowess for our team, and she is always in the right spot on defense," said Weatherford. "Again, her high number of digs show that she is an emerging defensive leader on our team. Reese Strouth and Georgianna Wenzel came in off the bench and had some key kills that kept us in sets two and three. Those two are younger athletes that are just coming into their own in the rotation."

The Chargers will hit the road this weekend for three contests in Springfield, Missouri. BC faces Evangel Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
