CHARGERS DROP TWO GAMES AT CONCORDIA

The Briar Cliff baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Concordia on Sunday afternoon in Seward, Nebraska.

Game 1 – L, 4-20
The Bulldogs struck first in game one, recording three runs on two hits in the first frame. Concordia was field by two homes runs in the inning to take an early 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the second, tallying two runs on four hits. Three singles and a solo home run gave CUNE the five-run advantage, but Brett Sitzmann was able to escape more damage as he struck out two.

The Chargers threatened in the top of the third. After Matt Hmielewski singled, Jared Sitzmann and Connor Lange both drew walks to load the bases. The Chargers, however, were unable to convert leaving the score 5-0 in favor of CUNE.

Concordia poured in more runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs drew three walks, tallied two singles, one double, and a two-run home run as the Chargers committed one error en route to a massive seven-run frame for the Bulldogs. After three innings of play, the Bulldogs held a large 12-0 lead.

Jake Allen gave some momentum back to BC as he laced a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth. Devon Farrell was also able to get on base, but the Chargers couldn't find any more runs in the frame. The score was now 1-12.

The Bulldog bats stayed hot. In the fourth, CUNE found three hits, including two home runs, and drew four walks to push six runs across the plate. The Cliff now found themselves in a 18-1 deficit.

The Blue and Gold fought back in the fifth. Trey Rogers walked to lead off the frame as Sitzmann got on base due to a Bulldog error. Lange then walked to load the bases and CUNE committed another error to score two for the Chargers. The Cliff wasn't done just yet as Allen tallied an RBI sacrifice flyout to cut the deficit to 4-18.

Concordia responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs tallied two hits in the inning, one of them being a two-run homer. Rylan Aamold managed to evade further pressure by forcing two fly outs and a ground out.

The Chargers were kept scoreless in both the sixth and seventh innings as they fell to CUNE in game one 4-20.

As a team, the Chargers carded four runs on four hits in game one. Four different Chargers tallied one hit each.

Sitzmann, Ryan Pearson and Aamold combined for eight strikeouts in game one. Sitzmann went 2.2 innings, Pearson threw 1.0 inning, as Aamold closed the game with 2.1 innings.

Game Two – L, 12-18
The Chargers hopped in the scoring column early in game two. After back-to-back singles from Rogers and Lange, Quentin Evers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Allen then roped a two-RBI double and was followed by a three-run big fly from Easton Cone. The Chargers weren't finished yet as Farrell also knocked a solo homer to give BC their first lead of the day 6-0 early in game two.

The Bulldogs responded with only one run of their own in the bottom of the first. CUNE carded three hits in the inning, including back-to-back doubles to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

CUNE poured in seven runs in the top of the second. The Bulldogs were fueled by four hits as the Chargers suffered three errors. CUNE found three extra-base hits, including two home runs, to force their way into a 8-6 lead.

The Chargers fought back in the top of the third. Allen led off with a single as courtesy runner, Jake Remar was pushed to second on ground ball. Cone then tallied and RBI single to inch the score closer 7-8.

Despite giving up a leadoff single, the Chargers tallied a double play to keep the Bulldogs out of the scoring in the bottom of the third frame. Heading to the fourth, the score was 7-8.

Rogers found the Chargers' third homer of game two in the top of the fourth, leading off with a big shot to center field to tie up the ballgame 8-8. Evers also singled through the left side, but the Chargers couldn't push any more runs across.

The Bulldogs carded one run on two hits and a costly Chargers error to take a 9-8 lead heading into the fifth.

The Blue and Gold took the lead back in the fifth. After a Bulldog error, Farrell tallied an RBI double and was driven in by a Hmielewski big fly to right field. Lange found a double late in the inning, but no more runs were pushed across as the Chargers now held an 11-9 lead.

The Bulldogs retaliated with four runs on two hits and a Charger error in the bottom of the fifth to push the score to 13-11 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Allen led off the sixth with a solo homerun to right field, but the Bulldog defense held strong to keep the lead 13-12.

CUNE would push their lead back to two in the sixth. Following a leadoff single, Alex Blakestad came around to score one two throwing errors to push the lead to 14-12.

The Charger offense couldn't get anything going for the remainder of the contest as Concordia plated four more runs. The Blue and Gold fell in game two 12-18 and now hold a 6-12 conference record.

The Chargers carded 19 hits in game two. Farrell and Allen led the way with three hits each, including a home run apiece, as four other Chargers tallied two hits.

Ryan Riddle chucked 4.2 innings on the mound, striking out three. Alex Kremer threw 3.0 innings, tallying three strikeouts, as Austin Carter closed out game two, getting one out.

The Chargers return to action when they travel to Hastings, Nebraska to face Hastings in a GPAC doubleheader on Monday, April 17. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
