The #12 ranked Charger women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season, topping the Avilla Eagles 85-48 in Kansas City, Missouri Wednesday evening.
With 7:33 remaining in the first quarter,
Payton Slaughter knocked down a three pointer that would spark a 13-4 run to give the Chargers a 22-10 lead in the quarter.
Kennedy Benne recorded a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup to give Briar Cliff a 29-10 lead heading into the second.
The Cliff in the second quarter took a 22-point lead after Slaughter recorded back-to-back layups. The Chargers led 42-18 midway through the second quarter, following two consecutive three-point baskets from
Mallie McNair.
Kenna Mongan pushed the Charger lead to 30 before half time, scoring on a second chance bucket after grabbing the offensive board.
Briar Cliff outscored Avila 33-26 in the second half, en route to a 85-48 win. The Chargers held the Eagles to 34.5% from the field, and 33.3% from downtown in the contest. The Chargers got out in transition, scoring 16 points off fast break opportunities. BCU recorded 42 points from inside the paint.
Slaughter recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Rachel Langel scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and recorded four blocks on 75% shooting from the field. McNair chipped in 12 points to go with four rebounds and two steals.
The Chargers will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on the Ottawa Braves in Ottawa, Kansas. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
