The Charger men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Morningside in the GPAC Semifinals after a 4-3 penalty shootout. The Chargers and Mustangs were tied 2-2 after the overtime periods. "I am incredibly proud to coach these boys," said Head Coach Teren Schuster. "We worked so hard and gave everything in the match, we didn't come out on the right end and that's football. We will learn and grow from this adversity."
The Chargers scored in the eighth minute of the match, as
Andrew Buchanan found the back of the net on an assist from
Mick Beinhauer. The Chargers held a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
The Mustangs responded in the second half with a goal in the 49
th minute. Morningside's Jonas Markfoged scored on an assist from Johannes Lang. The Cliff looked to take the lead as time expired, but
Pablo Garcia-Pola Coppen's shot went wide right of the net.
In the 95
th minute, the Mustang's Niklas Kneller scored on an assist from Levi Von Hagen to give Morningside a 2-1 lead. Buchannan scored his second goal of the match in the 106
th minute to force the contest into a shootout.
The Mustangs took the victory after a 4-3 score in the shootout.
Hjalmar Nilsson recorded six saves in 110 minutes at goal for the Chargers. Beinhauer recorded two shots with one assist. Nicolas Karlsen tallied three shots with two on goal.
The Chargers earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NAIA National Tournament. They will learn their opening-round matchup and location on Monday, November 13
th, on the NAIA Selection Show.
