The Charger men's soccer team won their GPAC regular season finale Saturday afternoon, beating the Jamestown Jimmies 1-0. The Cliff locked up the number one seed in the tournament, and will host a home playoff match on Faber Field next Wednesday.
"It was a difficult away trip for us to wrap up the final conference game," said Head Coach Teren Schuster. "I'm really proud of the boys on the season we've had. To make history for the program as the first team to win the GPAC regular season is something to be proud of."
In the 28th minute, Briar Cliff's Andrew Buchannan had his shot turned away by Jimmie's goalie Matthew English. Briar Cliff and Jamestown entered intermission scoreless.
In the 72nd minute, the Jimmies committed a foul in the box, setting up the Chargers for a penalty kick. Nicolas Karlsen scored on the ensuing play, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
In the 89 minute, Jamestown looked for the equalizer, but Maximillien Gallais' shot went wide of the net.
Hjalmar Nillsoon put together a solid performance in the net for the Chargers, recording eight saves in the contest.
Pablo Garcia-Pola Coppen recorded two shots on goal, while Buchannan placed one on goal.
The Chargers conclude the regular season with a 12-2-2 (9-0-2 GPAC) record. "To make history for the program as the first team to win the GPAC regular season is something to be proud of," said Schuster. "Unbeaten in GPAC play and 8-0 away from home is a fantastic record to have as well."
Briar Cliff will return to Faber Field Wednesday for the GPAC quarterfinal and host #8 seed Dakota Wesleyan. The Chargers and Tigers tied in Sioux City during their regular season meeting. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
