SECOND-HALF SCORING BARRAGE LEADS CHARGERS TO GPAC SEMIFINALS

A second-half scoring barrage propelled the top-seeded Charger men's soccer program to a 5-0 win over the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers in their GPAC quarterfinal matchup Wednesday afternoon on Faber Field.

"We put together a pretty good performance today, in the first half we created a few chances, and their goalkeeper came up with a couple of good saves," said Head Coach Teren Schuster. "In the second half, we were able to raise our level and create more chances, we're happy with the result but we're focused on the semifinal on Saturday now."

Early in the first half, Briar Cliff created a chance after Andrew Buchanan fed a no-look pass to Nicolas Karlsen, whose shot went wide right. The Tiger's goalkeeper Hunter Birozy was busy early, turning away six shots in the first half.

The Chargers got on the board early in the second half, as Buchanan scored off an assist from Karlsen. Filip Peters scored on a second-chance opportunity in the 68th minute to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. Antoni Llull Plomer scored on a corner kick from Pablo Garcia-Pola Coppen in the 77th minute, followed by a goal from Karlsen, assisted by Mick Beinhauer to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead. Plomer capped off the scoring in the 85th minute, netting his second goal of the match and closed out the scoring 5-0 in favor of the Cliff.

For the third straight contest, the Briar Cliff defense put together another clean sheet. Hjalmar Nilsson recorded one save in his 90 minutes at goalkeeper. The defense of Herman Toftevåg, Daniel Ehlin, Finlay Skilling, and Coppen limited the Tigers to just four shots in the contest with one shot on goal.

The Chargers will move on to the semifinal round, and host their next playoff game on Faber Field Saturday at 1 p.m. They will play the winner of the Hastings and Morningside matchup.
