Charger baseball scores 13 runs in win over Roosevelt

Box Score Briar Cliff baseball earned their first victory of the season Sunday with a 13-0 rout over Roosevelt in Joplin, Missouri. Ryan Aamold took the mound for the first time as a Charger and tossed six shutout innings.

"It was a good bounce back day today," said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "We saw a lot of good things and Rylan and Ryan were very efficient in their first appearances as Chargers. It was good to get some games under our belt heading into a tough series with Bellevue next weekend. "

Mike Anthony got the Chargers on the board in the second inning with a RBI double to score Walter Hunt. With two outs in the inning, Matthew Hmielewski drove in Anthony to go up 2-0 but was thrown out trying to advance to second, ending the inning.

Hmielewski singled to kick off the fifth inning and reached third base after stealing second and advancing on a dropped third strike. In the next at-bat, Hmielewski scored on a passed ball to put the Cliff up 3-0. The Chargers put up five runs in the fifth and sixth innings extending their lead to 13-0.

The Lakers threatened in the bottom of the first, with a runner reaching third base with two outs. Aamold escaped the inning with a swinging strikeout to keep the score 0-0. Roosevelt again had runners in scoring position on first and second in the second inning with one out. Aamold forced a Laker ground ball, and the Charger infield turned a 5-4-3 double play.

Aamold pitched six innings, striking out four, walking zero and surrendering just four hits. Ryan Riddle pitched one inning in relief, allowing zero hits with two strikeouts.

Quentin Evers accounted for five Charger runs, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and one walk. Jake Allen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Anthony had two RBIs and one run.

In total, 11 Chargers scored a run, five recorded a hit and eight drew at least one walk.

The Chargers head to Bellevue, Nebraska next Friday and Saturday for a three-game series against Bellevue. Game one is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday's doubleheader is set to start at 12 p.m.
