The Briar Cliff football team fell behind early in the first half and dropped a conference matchup 21-56 to #20 Midland Saturday.
Â
"Hats off to Midland. They are well coached and played a great game," said head coach
Shane LaDage. "Our thoughts are with their QB and we hope he gets good news and has a quick recovery. We struggled to get stops defensively and stay on the field offensively in the first half. However, I'm proud of how we responded and battled in the second half. We moved the ball effectively on the ground and through the air and we were much more sound defensively. There's plenty to build on and we are excited to get back to work in the morning."
Â
The Warriors received the ball first, and immediately tested the defense by moving into Charger territory on their third play. On fourth and one on the 21-yard line,
Brett Tinker made a huge stop to turn the Warriors over on downs.
After picking up one first down, the BC offense stalled and punted back to Midland. The Warriors recorded their first touchdown after an 18-play, 78-yard touchdown drive. The 20th ranked team in the NAIA scored three more times in the first half and led 28-0 at the intermission.
Â
A pair of
Luke Davies 20-yard completions from
Luke Davies to
Kobe Johnson and
Aaron Okoro set up the Chargers in Warrior territory.
Asante Anglin capped off the drive with a 19-yard rushing touchdown.
Â
The Chargers put together a 17-play, 95-yard touchdown drive to start the fourth quarter. After
Spencer George drew a pass interference penalty in the endzone,
E'mond Pittman recorded his first TD of the season with a two-yard rush.
Â
Davies and George connected for their fourth touchdown of the season late in the fourth quarter. The drive was set up off a Warrior fumble forced by
Brett Tinker and recovered by
MJ Montgomery.
Â
Davies completed 16 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown. Anglin and Pittman each scored a TD while rushing for 31 and 30 yards, respectively. Okoro totaled 62 yards on four catches, and George had four receptions for 45 yards.
Â
Tinker had 11 tackles (five solo),
Christian Balmer had eight (three solo) and Montgomery had seven with 2.0 tackles for a loss.
Â
Briar Cliff will head to Mitchell, South Dakota next Saturday for a meeting with Dakota Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Tigers.
