In just his sophomore season at Briar Cliff,
Luke Davies broke the Chargers' career completions record in Saturday's game against Dakota Wesleyan. BC outgained the Tigers by over 130 yards, but were unable to overcome four costly turnovers.
"I'm really proud to coach a group of men who have zero quit in them," said head coach
Shane LaDage. "Turnovers were the difference in the game and DWU was able to capitalize on them. To bounce back in the second half the way we did shows the character and toughness of the men in our locker room."
Davies converted 10-of-26 for 179 yards, two touchdowns but threw three interceptions on the day. Davies has completed 334 passes in a Blue and Gold jersey and has 4,170 career passing yards.
The Chargers totaled 354 yards of offense behind a season high 164 rushing yards.
Asante Anglin provided the spark for a Charger run game that entered the contest averaging 52.9 yards per game. Anglin totaled 124 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown. All but one of his carries resulted in positive yards for the Cliff on his way to a 7.7 yards per carry average.
On the Chargers' first possession, DWU's Adam DeJong intercepted Davies' pass and returned it for his first pick-six of the game. The Tigers tacked on a field goal in the first minute of the second quarter to take an early 10-0 lead.
Jonathan Branner put the Cliff's first points on the board with a 31-yard field goal with four minutes left in the half. The 15-play, 67-yard drive was run heavy with 10 rushes combined between Anglin and
E'mond Pittman.
A couple of splash plays from the Charger offense in the third quarter quickly brought the game to a 17-17 tie. BC received the ball to start the second half, and after a few short yardage plays, Anglin burst through a hole on the right side for a 39-yard TD.
The defense forced a three-and-out after a pair of tackles for a loss from
MJ Montgomery and
Angel Nava-Esparza. Facing a third-and-long Davies completed a pass to
Tim Brown five yards short of the first down, but after a pair of jukes the speedy wide receiver went 64 yards for the touchdown.
DWU responded with 14 unanswered points off DeJong's second pick-six and a 53-yard TD drive to go up 31-17.
The Chargers wouldn't go away easily, responding with a quick two-minute scoring drive capped off by a Davies to
Kobe Johnson 36-yard strike. The defense did their job by forcing a Tiger punt with 2:02 remaining in the game. However, BC would turn the ball over on downs after coming up two yards short of a fourth and long completion to end the game.
Brett Tinker had a team high nine tackles and
Winston Gassant had eight. BC totaled five tackles for a loss and had four pass breakups.
The Chargers have an upcoming bye week and will next take the field in Orange City, Iowa on October 29 against #4 Northwestern.
