The Briar Cliff women's volleyball team fell behind two sets to Morningside Wednesday night and battled back but were unable to complete a comeback.
"Chloe, Toria and Sami have been the most consistent hitters for us tonight and all season. They are getting the experience necessary for them to be successful in the future which includes the next year or two," said head coach
Lindsey Weatherford. "We are still a relatively young team and have much to work on. This is an example of how we can be down 0-2 sets and yet come back to force teams into extra sets. Now we need to learn how to terminate and score to extend those extra sets and turn them into wins."
The Mustangs held the lead throughout the majority of the first set, which saw the Cliff hit just .128. However, the Cliff rallied late with a 7-1 run to take a 23-22 lead after an
Alexis Johnson kill. Morningside would take the next three points to take set one. The Chargers grabbed an early 5-3 edge in set two, but the Mustangs would take the set behind a pair of six-point runs.
The Chargers most consistent set was in the third, maintaining two-to-three scoring runs throughout. BC never let the Mustangs find a rhythm in the set by allowing them to score more than two points in a row just five times.
Chloe and
Alexis Johnson were key in the 25-21 third set win, as the duo combined for 10 of BC's 13 kills.
Briar Cliff held the lead throughout the fourth set and looked to push the match to a fifth set but with a 23-17 lead the Cliff stumbled. After four straight BC points, the Mustangs rattled off seven straight points to close out the match 3-1.
Chloe Johnson had a team high 16 kills on a .213 hitting percentage to go with 11 digs and three blocks.
Alexis Johnson had 12 kills and one block, while
Toria Andre had 11 kills with two blocks.
Sami Wasmund had six kills, three blocks and one ace.
Abbey Jones recorded two service aces and a game high 31 digs, while
Tannah Heath dished out 41 assists and had 12 digs.
The Chargers will head to Jamestown, North Dakota this Saturday for a matchup with #2 Jamestown at 3:00 p.m.
