A slow start doomed the Briar Cliff football team Saturday as they fell to Hastings 9-28 in Hastings, Nebraska. BC falls to 1-5 on the year and 1-4 in the GPAC.
Â
"Hats off to a good Hastings team. We didn't start off well in the first half and it proved to be too tough to overcome," said head coach
Shane LaDage. "I thought our defense made major strides in the second half, but our offense wasn't able to get into any sort of rhythm. On a positive note I'd like to congratulate
MJ Montgomery on becoming the programs all-time leader in sacks!"
Â
Montgomery was a bright spot for the Cliff today, totaling 11 tackles (seven solo) and 3.0 sacks. He becomes the Chargers all-time leader with 21.0 career sacks, passing Robert Robinson's mark of 18.5.
Â
Following a BC three-and-out to start the game,
Antonio Brown Jr. snagged his first interception of the year on the Broncos first play of the game. The Chargers faced second and long, following a first-down sack, and would turn the ball over on downs on a fake punt.
Â
Hastings put together three straight touchdown drives to end the first quarter, while the Charger offense struggled to find a rhythm. However, the Charger defense settled in after the opening 15 minutes, allowing just one touchdown over the final three quarters.
The Chargers put points on the scoreboard late in the third after back-to-back long balls from
Luke Davies. He found
Aaron Okoro for a 29-yard pickup to start the drive and aired out a 46-yard touchdown to
Spencer George.
Â
Brett Tinker notched 17 tackles (10 solo) and had .5 tackles for a loss.
Christian Balmer recorded 10 tackles, while
Lakey Martin had one sack.
Â
Davies completed 12 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. George caught four passes for 82 yards, while Okoro had four receptions for 51 yards.
Â
The Chargers will be back on Memorial Field next Saturday for a matchup with #17 Midland. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
