Charger football picked up a much-needed win Saturday with a 27-18 victory at Hastings. With temperatures hovering right at freezing for most of the contest, the Cliff battled for 60 minutes and came away with its first win of 2020.
The Briar Cliff defense tallied two interceptions on the afternoon, both of which resulted in touchdowns for the Chargers.
Mike Green picked off a pass attempt at his own 16-yard line and returned it 58 yards to put the Cliff in scoring position.
King Waller found the endzone two plays later and
Jonathan Branner's kick attempt was good to put the Chargers up 21-10. Waller had a breakout game for the Chargers, rushing for 74 yards on 11 attempts after having just one carry in the previous four contests.
"A lot of our prayers were answered today," said head coach
Dennis Wagner. "Our offense made some big strides and
King Waller came in, stepped up and had a great game."
BC's second interception came courtesy of
Donald Garland with less than five minutes to play. Garland returned his pick 43 yards for a touchdown to put his team up 27-18 and secure the Charger win.
Hastings had two more drives to attempt a comeback, but the Cliff's defense held strong and held off the Broncos.
Kreggor Clark had two receptions for the Charger offense, one of which was for BC's first score of the game. Forcella had three catches and Forcella and Clark had 52 yards each.
Robert Robinson had nine tackles on the day (seven solo, two assisted) and three sacks for 17 yards. The senior had 4.5 tackles for loss for 24.5 yards.
Mark Snorton added seven tackles for BC while Green and
Kwan Allen II added five each.
In total, the Chargers ran for 112 yards, compared to 89 by Hastings, although the Broncos did have better numbers through the air and overall.
"Overall, I am so proud of our Chargers!" Wagner added.
The Chargers will look for another win next week as the Chargers travel to the 1-5 Dakota Wesleyan Tigers. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m in Mitchell, South Dakota.
