Cory Miller, a native of Marshalltown, Iowa, is in his first year as the Chargers' defensive backs and special teams' coach. He came to Briar Cliff following one season at Illinois College, where he held the same position.
"Cory brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for special teams," said Rethman. "Being from Central Iowa, Cory is going to help with in-state recruiting, especially around Des Moines."
Miller also oversaw Illinois' special teams units and all travel arrangements. His defensive backfield led the conference in interceptions and was ranked in the top 10 nationally in that department. Prior to that, Miller was the defensive backs coach and special teams' coordinator at MacMurray College in 2010. In one season, he helped to drastically improve the Highlanders' defense. At MacMurray, Miller's recruiting focused on junior colleges and the state of Missouri.
Miller began his coaching career at Northern Iowa, while he was earning his undergraduate degree. He served as a student assistant coach there, helping out with the team's running backs. He earned his bachelor's degree in 2005. In 2006, he became a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State University and was promoted to defensive line coach after one season. His recruiting terrain included Iowa, Southern Minnesota, Dallas/Fort Worth, Florida and Las Vegas. He remained at Southwest Minnesota State until 2008, when he became the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Rockford College. While there, he also served as the team's academic coordinator and managed the college's intramural program. He focused his recruiting efforts on Northwest and Central Illinois, Northern Chicago and Florida. He earned his master's degree from Rockford in 2010, but not before serving as the college's men's tennis coach for one year.
