CHARGERS' FALL SHORT IN FOURTH-QUATER RALLY FOR THE CATHOLIC CUP

The Charger football team fell 49-35 in the Catholic Cup to the Mount Marty Lancers Saturday evening to open GPAC play.

Mount Marty opened the scoring with a touchdown on its opening drive before the Chargers answered with Brock Saya connecting with Kymani Fleurme for a four-yard touchdown. 

The Lancers added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, but Saya found Fleurme for another score and later rushed for a two-yard touchdown where Saya broke the career passing touchdown record to send the Chargers into halftime trailing 21-14.

Mount Marty extended its lead in the third quarter with two touchdowns, taking a 34-14 advantage. The Chargers entered the fourth quarter looking to mount a comeback, and Saya and Fleurme quickly connected for a 28-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 13.

The Chargers continued their fourth-quarter push as Saya found Fleurme for a 15-yard touchdown, bringing Briar Cliff within six at 34-28. Mount Marty responded with a 63-yard touchdown pass, but Briar Cliff answered just one minute later when Saya connected with Dyson Fay for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 42-35.
The Lancers added one final touchdown with 4:08 remaining to secure the 49-35 victory.

Saya finished the night 23-for-42 passing for 366 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown. Fleurme led the Chargers with eight receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Fay added four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Ezra Heiner recorded five receptions for 74 yards.

Chase Thomas led the Charger rushing attack with 51 yards on 11 carries, while Saya added nine rushing yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Cameron Cayou and Tegen Hoffman led the Chargers with eight tackles apiece. Alexavier Fennell added six tackles, while Dayton Harrell and Keivon Booker each finished with five tackles. Booker also recorded four pass breakups.

The Chargers finished with 441 yards of total offense, including 366 passing yards, and converted 10-of-14 third-down opportunities.

The Cliff falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in GPAC play. The chargers will return to action Saturday September 12th, hosting the Midland Warriors. Schedule for kick off time is 1p.m.
