The Briar Cliff softball team split a pair of games with Mount Marty on Friday, using a late comeback to secure an 8–5 win in game one, before falling 6–1 in game two.
Game 1 vs. Mount Marty – W, 8–5
The Chargers staged a dramatic comeback in the opener, rallying from a five-run deficit to defeat the Lancers 8–5.
Mount Marty jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs behind a two-run home run from Hudson along with a double and a Charger error. Hudson added another run in the fourth with a solo home run to extend the lead.
Trailing entering the seventh, BCU flipped the game with a five-run inning to take control. The rally featured four hits, with the biggest swing coming from
Sydney Mennenga, who delivered a two-run single on the seventh pitch of her at-bat to give the Chargers the lead.
Aubrey White earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits. She struck out four and walked one.
Offensively,
Kaela Persico led the Chargers with a 3-for-4 performance and three RBIs, while both Persico and
Sydney Ebel recorded three hits. Mennenga added two walks as Briar Cliff showed patience at the plate with seven total walks.
Game 2 vs. Mount Marty – L, 6–1
Briar Cliff was unable to carry the momentum into game two, falling 6–1 to Mount Marty.
The Lancers took control early, scoring in the first inning and adding another run in the second. Mount Marty continued to build their lead throughout the game, while limiting Briar Cliff offensively.
Elizabeth Austin drove in the Chargers' lone run of the contest. Blankenship, Ebel,
Leah Montes,
Kenadee Loew, and Mennenga each recorded a hit, while Briar Cliff drew four walks as a team.
Shelby Blankenship took the loss in the circle, working six innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out five.
Mount Marty was led by Richardson and Toplovich, who each collected two hits, while Ocegueda-Aguilar drove in two runs.
Briar Cliff returns to action Saturday, March 28, heading to Fremont, Nebraska to take on the Midland Warriors. First pitch is slated for for 1:00 p.m. with the second game set for 3:00 p.m.
